Father of the groom

Father of the groom

In case you don't know, I'm Ben's dad. As well as being the MC for the evening I'm also expected to make a "father of the groom" speech.  I've never made one of those before - Ben is my only son and I don't have a daughter, so this is it.  It's my only chance so I'd better get it right.  Since I have no idea how to get it right so, I'm just going to get on with it. I’m only one of Ben’s parents, so this afternoon I’m representing his mother...

Let me see if I can hook you up with someone.

Let me see if I can hook you up with someone.

This is my first post in a week.  Theoretically I intend to posts every couple of days, but I'm not sure where that intention came from.  Eve posts almost every day in her blog Yoga Suits Her.  She's done that for most of 6 years with a few short breaks.  That's scary discipline, but Eve's a yoga teacher and has been for 30+ years.  I've come to expect that sort of discipline from her.  I rebel against it of course; it's not something I'm...

I’m a character in a book and the book is free!

I’m a character in a book and the book is free!

I started this project with the intention of being anonymous.  I don't know why, it just seemed like a good idea at the time.  I've become less anonymous as time has gone on.  I've become Daniel rather than just Chaostica and I've mentioned Eve by name.  My friends, of course, know who I am.  And since I started the Anti-Anti-Vaccine Campaign (here, here and here) my full name has appeared because all of that is Facebook based and Facebook...

One day wonder

One day wonder

There is an immediacy to the internet; at least that's true in social media.  Things happen, sometimes for completely mysterious reasons, then they are over.  Last week was an interesting time for me in cyberspace. Last Tuesday this blog got 938 hits.  For some sites that's a small number, but not this one.  I only started blogging a couple of months ago, I've been quite tentative and irregular, I don't have a topic and have been forcing...

Obsession. Grand or otherwise.

Obsession. Grand or otherwise.

In 1985 I got obsessed.  My obsession was the Macintosh computer I'd bought and getting it to do things that I wanted it to do.  My idea was to get a computer to help my business, and I tried hard to make that happen, with little success.  The problem was that it was a Macintosh computer and it was 1985.  The Mac hadn't been around long and didn't do very much.  It was little more than a toy at that point; a very impressive toy, but its...

Impatience

Impatience

I've done more writing in the last few weeks than I have in pretty much my entire life.  And I'm discovering something about what that is. I'm impatient.  I've always written in a short and highly condensed manner.  Eve refers to it as my Hallmark Cards style.  I do it very quickly and then it's over. Now that I'm writing slightly longer pieces I'm finding that I haven't got the patience to really work out what I'm doing.  Everything seems to...

Hey, that was lucky! A few thoughts about luck.

Hey, that was lucky! A few thoughts about luck.

Am I qualified to talk about luck?  Am I lucky? Is anyone lucky? Do we make our own luck?  Here's a story. I sold my share of my business two and a half years ago and left the business I'd been working in for 17 years.  I'd researched how much money Eve and I would need to have in order to retire, and we didn't have nearly enough.  I told friends that we were in great shape.  We had all the money we needed so long as we organised to die within...

Comments I’ve gotten.

Comments I’ve gotten.

I get comments.  The other day I had a rush of blood to my head and started a cause on Facebook.  It was about discouraging anti-vaccination propaganda on Facebook.  No big deal, right? I got some pretty quick response.  There are now 88 people who've taken the pledge.  Since I've done almost nothing to promote it I think this is fairly encouraging.  The other thing I've been getting is a flood of anti-vaccination comments.  I'm trying to find...

My first diet. Really.

My first diet. Really.

My BMI (Body Mass Index) is 25.2. Overweight starts at 25. So I'm now on a diet. I like to claim that I have always been thin. Mostly that's because I was thin for a very long time. But little by little I've progressed from not thin through normal through the higher end of normal and finally to being officially overweight at 64 years of age. It's clear to me that my idea of overweight is a non-event to most people. They can see that I'm heavier...

98 hits on Wednesday! Wow!

98 hits on Wednesday! Wow!

When I started this blog I had in mind just playing; experimenting with the medium, being anonymous and not paying any attention to whether or not anyone was reading it. It didn't really seem important. Within a couple of weeks I found myself adding "Share" buttons to the posts, finding ways to have each post automatically announced to Facebook, Twitter and Linked In, and sending copies to my (so far) uncomplaining friends and family. And I've...

The fire next time

The fire next time

It's not going to win any photography contests (iPhones have their limitations), but it was pretty stunning to look at.   That's our house as viewed from the Yoga Shed.  We were in the middle of a rainy class and the sun crept under a cloud. (I don't really mean it about the fire.)
